Hi,

First of all, there is no centralized office in France like the GRO in the UK, for example. As a consequence, there is no one-stop access to this kind of data.

Second, in an effort to preserve the private data of living citizens, birth and marriage records are only disclosable after 75 years, and death records are freely disclosable immediately. That said, recommendations for online publication is, at least 100 years for birth records, 75 years for marriages, and 25 for death records. A few archives do have their records available along those guidelines, but most of them stop short, and even way short of them, mostly because of budget constraints for digitalisation.

Recently, the INSEE, the national institute for statistics, released online their death files: it's a list of (mostly) every citizen who died in France between 1970 and now. The records are woefully incomplete for the earlier period due to spotty computer access at the time, but it's nearly complete after the 1990s. It's not free from errors, though, so you should always order the birth and/or death records to verify the information. Thankfully that part is free in France. The death files were indexed by Geneanet, but are only available with Premium access. You can otherwise interrogate the database on this site: https://deces.matchid.io/?advanced=true

Regards,
K
