He emigrated to the United States around 1700, supposedly with two brothers, Thomas and William, and ended up in Ridgefield, CT. He is an ancestor of my husband, another William Scott. Trying to find out who his parents were and if his family was part o the Ulster Plantation families. Thank you!

The surname Scott is pretty common in Co. Londonderry. It’s not a native Irish name. Looking at the 1831 census there were 114 Scott households in the county. Most were Presbyterian or Church of Ireland so the location, the surname and the denominations all suggest the vast majority of Scotts were incomers, mainly from Scotland I would expect. (Half the county has the same background).

There are almost no comprehensive records for the late 1600s/early 1700s and it's virtually impossible to research back to that period in Ireland.

Possibly DNA testing may be a way of matching with others who have additional information about where the family originate. Family Tree DNA reportedly has more people with Ulster roots than any other company. That obviously increases the chances of finding a match. You might want to try them or, if you have already tested, you can transfer your results to them for no fee.

The North of Ireland Family History Society is running an Ulster DNA project in conjunction with FTDNA and can offer testing kits at a reduced price. http://www.nifhs.org (Go to DNA project on the website).
